When you first step into Bodega 13 in north Scottsdale, the bar snakes to the right, with booths, tables and chairs, and a tapas bar contained in a cozy setting. Globe lighting of various sizes and colors hang from the ceiling, providing a colorful backdrop to the lively environment.
It’s all the more inviting with scents from the kitchen filling the air, and on this Thursday, classic jazz and blues from vocalist Francine Reed. It was July 26, 2018, the seventh consecutive Thursday of jazz presented by the club, and it was sold out. That’s the kind of momentum ownership was hoping for, and more performances are planned for a Thursday through Saturday jazz schedule beginning in September (Blaise Lantana will perform September 21).
But if jazz is what it takes to get you inside Bodega 13, the food and ambiance will have you coming back for more. A full bar and wine list complement the menu, which features exotic Spanish fare with a southwestern flair, such as duck tacos and a variety of tapas.
The acoustics in Bodega 13 suited Reed and her band, which included Stan Sorenson on guitar, Bob Lashier on bass, Dowell Davis on drums, and Joel Robin on piano, with 84-year-old Richie Oropeza joining the combo on sax. They sounded fresh and feisty on a selection of swinging jazz and blues shouters that had the crowd swaying in their seats.
Bodega 13 is located at 8876 E. Pinnacle Peak Road in the La Mirada Shopping Center. More information is available at their website, scottsdale.bodega13.com.
