The world mourns the loss of vocalist Cassandra Wilson who passed away September 1st at her home in Jackson, Mississippi. She was 70. Wilson's deep, smoky, genre-bending contralto made her one of the most arresting and influential jazz vocalists of the last 40 years. She was a 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, and twice won the Grammy award for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her 1996 New Moon Daughter, and for the 2008 standards album Loverly. She also performed one of the leading roles in Wynton Marsalis' "Blood on the Fields," the first jazz work to receive a Pulitzer Prize.
In her final interview before her retirement, KJZZ jazz host Blaise Lantana spoke with esperanza spalding about her upcoming Saturday, September 19th concert at the MIM Music Theater, 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix, AZ 85050. She will perform two shows at 6 pm and 8 pm on the 19th, and one show at 6 pm on Sunday, September 20th. Tickets available at mim.org
